What We Don’t Know

Thiadora "Dori" Pina, a clinical professor of law at Santa Clara University, has been a guiding force for first-generation law students. Having experienced the challenges of being a first-gen student herself, she is deeply committed to mentoring and empowering her students on their law school journey. Pina's struggles navigating college and law school have fueled her passion to create a supportive and inclusive environment for her students, addressing issues like imposter syndrome and feelings of isolation. Her dedication to supporting first-gen students extends beyond the classroom; she is actively involved in various initiatives, advocating for equal opportunities in the legal profession. Pina's genuine devotion to her students, combined with her realness and transparency, has made her an essential resource for those navigating the complexities of law school as first-generation students.

Discern: 2023 Issue

The School of Law at Santa Clara University has appointed its first-ever senior director of diversity, equity, and inclusion, Dori. In her current roles as a clinical professor and director of the Law School's externship program, Dori has demonstrated a commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive learning environment. The newly created position aims to strengthen the enrollment, retention, and success of all students and faculty within the framework of the law. Dean Michael Kaufman emphasized the importance of building on the law school's diversity as a distinctive strength, which will involve efforts such as increasing enrollment from underrepresented communities and recruiting outstanding educators.
